Marriage proposal at Tiergarten Schönbrunn in Vienna surrounded by penguins

at the oldest zoo in operation in the world, Schönbrunn Zoo

Penguins aren’t just cuties but quite the romantic inspo – as they’re known to have one partner for the whole of their animal lives. Some penguin subspecies perform courtship rituals that are similar to human engagement rituals. For example, penguins give pebbles or polished rocks to females as a symbol of their commitment to mate and build a nest. This fun fact is why there can't be a better place for a marriage proposal than Schönbrunn Zoo (German: Tiergarten Schönbrunn) in the city of Vienna, Austria. Established in 1752, it is the world's oldest zoo still in operation. The zoo was the brainchild of Emperor Franz I, Maria Theresa’s husband. What started as a menagerie adjacent to the summer residence of the Habsburgs, flourished into a full-fledged zoo with royal patronage. The zoo’s royal origins are evident from the grand architecture that retains some of its 18th-century ironwork and domed pavilions.
